Photo prints on t-shirts have become hugely popular - whether for personal gifts, memorials, family events, or creative merch. The challenge is that printing a photo isn't the same as printing a logo. Colours, contrast, and resolution all behave differently on fabric than they do on screen.
At Halo Print Co we print photo-quality t-shirts every week. Here's how to make sure your photo translates beautifully onto fabric.
1. Start with a High-Resolution Image
The single biggest factor in photo-print quality is the source image. Low-res photos will look pixelated or blurry, no matter how good the printer is. Aim for at least 300 DPI at the final print size. A phone photo straight from the camera is usually fine. A screenshot or compressed social media download usually isn't.
2. Choose the Right Printing Method
For photo prints, DTG (Direct-to-Garment) is the gold standard. It handles gradients, skin tones, and unlimited colours without requiring screens. DTF is the alternative for dark synthetic fabrics. Screen printing isn't suitable - it can't reproduce continuous-tone photography.
3. Pick the Right Garment
Fabric affects how a photo looks once it's printed:
- 100% cotton - the best canvas for DTG. Sharp detail and accurate colour.
- Cotton blends - work well but slightly softer detail.
- Polyester - better suited to DTF.
- Colour - light garments give the truest colour reproduction. Dark garments need a white underbase, which DTG handles well.
4. Edit and Prepare the Photo
Before you send the file, take a few minutes to prep it:
- Crop tight on the subject - photos look stronger on a shirt when the subject fills more of the frame.
- Boost contrast slightly - fabric absorbs ink and can soften images.
- Adjust skin tones if needed - some screen colours shift on fabric.
- Remove or simplify cluttered backgrounds, especially for memorial or portrait shirts.
5. Think About Placement and Size
Photo prints look best when they're proportional to the garment:
- Centre chest - classic and balanced.
- Full front - bold, statement size.
- Pocket placement - too small for most photos, use for cropped portraits only.
6. Get a Proof Before Bulk Printing
For any photo job, especially memorials or gifts, we always recommend approving a digital proof or sample print before producing a full run. This catches colour shifts, sizing issues, or background problems before you commit.
7. Care Instructions Matter More
Photo prints can fade faster than block-colour prints if mistreated. Wash inside-out in cold water, mild detergent, no bleach. Air dry. Never iron directly on the print.
When Photo T-Shirts Work Best
- Memorial shirts
- Family reunions and birthdays
- Pet portraits
- Band and artist merch
- Wedding party gifts
- Charity and fundraising shirts
Whatever the occasion, the recipe is the same: high-res photo, right method, right garment, careful prep, proof first. Get those right and the result is a t-shirt people genuinely treasure.
