Name Printing on Shirts: A Practical Guide

Name Printing on Shirts: A Practical Guide

Adding names to printed shirts is one of the most common requests we get at Halo Print Co. Sports teams, work uniforms, hens and bucks parties, school groups, family reunions - they all need a way to add individual names to a base design without going broke. The good news: with the right method, name printing is fast, accurate, and looks great.

Why Name Printing Is Different to Standard Printing

Standard print runs use the same artwork on every shirt. Name printing means each garment is unique. That changes how setup, pricing, and turnaround work. You can't just run a screen because the artwork changes per piece.

Best Methods for Name Printing

1. DTF (Direct-to-Film) Transfers

DTF is our most-used method for name printing. We print each name onto film, then heat-press the transfer onto the garment. It's fast, accurate, durable, and works on cotton, polyester, and blends.

2. DTG (Direct-to-Garment)

DTG works well for name printing on cotton garments and is great when names need to integrate with a complex front design.

3. Embroidery

Embroidery is the premium option for names - perfect for uniforms, polo shirts, caps, and corporate apparel where you want a refined, professional finish.

Sports Team Name Printing

Sports teams typically want names and numbers on the back of jerseys. We handle this with DTF or screen printing depending on the order size. Bigger leagues with set rosters use screen printing for the numbers and DTF for the names. Smaller teams use DTF for everything.

Work Uniform Name Printing

For staff uniforms, we usually combine an embroidered logo on the chest with an embroidered name beneath it, or a DTF name strip if the logo is screen printed. The mix depends on the garment and how the brand wants names presented.

Event and Group Shirts

Hens nights, bucks parties, school events, milestone birthdays, family reunions - we print these every week. We typically use DTF because it lets us mix names, designs, and even individual photos across the run without ballooning the setup cost.

How to Plan a Name Print Order

  1. Send the name list early - in a spreadsheet, not in a screenshot.
  2. Match name to garment size - we line up Sarah XS, Mike L, Priya M etc.
  3. Lock the spelling - typos are the most common avoidable problem.
  4. Pick the font - keep it readable, not too thin, not too decorative.
  5. Choose the placement - back yoke, chest, sleeve, lower back.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending names without sizes attached - leads to mix-ups.
  • Using overly stylised fonts that don't read at small print sizes.
  • Choosing print colours with too little contrast against the garment.
  • Skipping a proof on the first shirt before printing the rest.

How Much Does Name Printing Cost?

Cost varies with method, name count, and order size. As a rough guide: DTF names are the most affordable per piece, DTG is comparable for cotton-only runs, and embroidery is the most premium. Pricing is best confirmed against your specific job - reach out and we'll quote it.
