What Is Sublimation Printing?

Dye sublimation printing uses specialised inks, transfer paper, heat and pressure to permanently dye polyester fabric.

The design is first printed onto transfer paper using sublimation inks. Heat is then applied, turning the dye into a gas that bonds with the polyester fibres. Once the fabric cools, the design becomes part of the material itself.

That means there isn't a separate layer of ink sitting on top of your garment.

Run your hand across a sublimated design and the fabric generally feels almost the same in the printed and unprinted areas.

Bright, Full-Colour Designs

Sportswear is where sublimation really comes into its own.

Team jerseys often need much more than a logo on the chest. You might need player names, numbers, sponsor logos, club colours, gradients, patterns and other design elements across the same garment.

With sublimation, these elements can be incorporated into the overall garment design rather than individually applied afterwards.

It's suitable for sports including football, rugby, basketball, netball, running, cycling and other activities where lightweight polyester garments are commonly used.

For clubs and teams, it also creates the opportunity to develop a genuinely custom look instead of simply adding a logo to an off-the-shelf shirt.

Sublimation T-Shirt Printing in Sydney

Sublimation can also be used for custom t-shirts, provided you're working with the right type of garment.

The method performs best on white or light-coloured polyester fabrics. Because sublimation dye doesn't use an opaque white ink layer, it won't produce the same results on dark garments.

If you want a design printed onto a black cotton tee, for example, another printing method will generally make much more sense.

That's why choosing your printing method should come after considering the artwork, fabric, garment colour and quantity rather than simply picking a technique because you've heard of it.

Sublimation vs DTF Printing

Sublimation and Direct to Film (DTF) can both produce detailed, colourful designs, but they work very differently.

Sublimation dyes polyester fibres themselves, while DTF creates a printed transfer that is applied to the surface of the garment.

Sublimation is particularly useful for polyester sportswear, performance garments and all-over designs. DTF is considerably more flexible when you need to print onto different materials or garment colours.

Sublimation vs Screen Printing

Screen printing remains one of the best options for many bulk apparel orders, particularly when you're printing the same design repeatedly onto cotton garments.

Sublimation serves a different purpose.

If your project involves detailed full-colour artwork, polyester performance garments or extensive coverage across the garment, sublimation may offer advantages that conventional screen printing can't.

On the other hand, if you're producing 100 cotton tees with a simple one or two-colour logo, screen printing may make much more sense.

There isn't one printing technique that's best for every job. It's about matching the process to what you're actually trying to make.

Is Sublimation Suitable for Cotton?

Generally, no.

Traditional dye sublimation relies on the ink bonding with polyester, which means 100% cotton isn't suitable for standard sublimation printing.

The higher the polyester content, the stronger and more vibrant the finished result will generally be.

If you've already chosen cotton garments, don't worry. There are other printing options available, including DTG, DTF and screen printing.

Preparing Artwork for Sublimation Printing

Good artwork makes a big difference to the finished product.

For the best results, provide your design in the highest quality available. Vector artwork such as AI, EPS or SVG files is particularly useful for logos and graphics, while high-resolution raster artwork should generally be supplied at around 300 DPI at the intended print size.

If your design includes photographs, gradients or detailed illustrations, make sure the original files are large enough to reproduce clearly.
